There are unfortunately many constraints in the world of orchestras with use of multimedia. More and more organizations and musicians are adopting new policies that allow the distribution of their music and videos of musicians’ performances online, but many are struggling with outdated union agreements and backward thinking administration. A small percentage of people love classical music. The only way for the rest of the public to learn to love it to is to make it easily accessible to them.
During my time with WVSO, they were not able to distribute any musicians performing. It is very difficult to market a product when you can’t show it. Instead, we were able to record the conductor Maestro Grant Cooper to record commentary on the concerts to come. I weaved this with public recordings of performances by other orchestras and our guest artists, and we had a tasteful promotion to share via email, our website, and social media.
